Coffee Grinders — The Upgrade That Actually Matters
The grinder matters more than the machine. Honest reviews of every burr grinder worth buying in the UK — from budget hand grinders to the best electrics under £200.
Why the Grinder Matters More Than the Machine
This is the single most important thing we can tell you about home espresso: a mediocre machine with a great grinder will consistently outperform a great machine with a poor grinder. Every time.
The reason is particle consistency. Espresso extraction works best when every coffee particle is the same size — water flows through uniformly, extracting flavour evenly. A blade grinder (or a cheap burr grinder) produces wildly inconsistent particle sizes. The water takes the path of least resistance through the finest particles, leaving the coarser ones under-extracted. The result is bitter, unbalanced espresso regardless of how good your machine is.
If you’re currently using a blade grinder and wondering why your espresso is inconsistent — this is why. A burr grinder upgrade will make a more noticeable difference than any machine upgrade at this stage.

Always Choose Burr Over Blade
Blade grinders chop randomly — the result is inconsistent particle sizes and uneven extraction. Any burr grinder, even a cheap one, produces better espresso than the best blade grinder.
Electric or Manual?
Electric is more convenient for multiple drinks. Manual produces better grind quality per pound spent. If you make one or two coffees a day and enjoy the ritual, manual is worth serious consideration.
Match to Your Machine
Sage machine owners should consider the Smart Grinder Pro for seamless integration. De’Longhi owners and everyone else are well served by the Baratza Encore as the default recommendation.
Budget Realistically
Spend at least £80-£100 on a burr grinder to see meaningful results. Below that, quality drops sharply. The sweet spot for most home baristas is £120-£180.
