Home Coffee Cost Calculator Compare capsule, bean-to-cup and semi-automatic setups
Enter the purchase price, consumable cost, maintenance allowance and expected lifespan for each setup. The calculator will compare the total cost and estimated cost per drink over your chosen ownership period.
Four cost layers rather than one headline price
Build a like-for-like ownership comparison
The starting figures are examples only. Replace them with the current machine prices, coffee costs and maintenance allowance that match the setups you are considering.
Semi-automatic
The result uses the example figures above. Change the prices, dose and lifespan to reflect the setups you are actually comparing.
Capsule machine
£0 £0.00 per drinkBean-to-cup
£0 £0.00 per drinkSemi-automatic
£0 £0.00 per drinkTotal ownership cost comparison
The cheapest setup is not automatically the best fit. Convenience, milk workflow, drink quality, noise, counter space and the time you want to spend preparing coffee can outweigh a modest cost difference.
Four parts make up each ownership total
The calculator avoids hidden fixed machine prices. Its output comes only from the figures shown in the form.
Usage over the period
Drinks per day are multiplied by days per week, 52 weeks and the selected number of years.
Purchase and replacement
The setup price is multiplied by the number of complete or partial lifespans required during the comparison period.
Pods or coffee beans
Capsules use a direct per-drink price. Bean setups calculate cost from the coffee price per kilogram and grams used per drink.
Maintenance and extras
Annual allowances and optional shared per-drink extras are added to each setup over the ownership period.
Replacement timing is deliberately simple
If the ownership period exceeds the expected setup life, the calculator adds another complete setup purchase. It does not estimate partial depreciation, repair probability, warranty cover or resale value.
Cost is only one part of choosing the setup
A small difference spread over several years may be less important than convenience, drink range or the amount of hands-on preparation the household actually wants.
Capsule convenience has a value
A higher consumable cost may still be acceptable when speed, consistency, minimal cleaning and a compact footprint are the priorities.
Bean-to-cup reduces manual work
The machine combines grinding and brewing, but cleaning routines, milk systems and internal complexity can affect ownership effort and maintenance.
Semi-automatic needs the full setup
The comparison should include a capable grinder and essential accessories rather than treating the espresso machine price as the complete cost.
Better coffee can cost more
A bean setup is not automatically cheap when the household chooses expensive specialty coffee or uses a large dose for every drink.
Comparing the total cost of home coffee
The most useful calculation is the one that reflects the coffee, dose, maintenance and ownership period you genuinely expect to use.
Are capsules always the most expensive option?
Not always. The result depends on capsule price, drinks per day, machine cost and ownership period. Low household use can make a modest capsule machine competitive despite the higher consumable cost.
Why are beans entered by kilogram and dose?
This lets the calculator reflect both the coffee you buy and how much the machine uses. A £20/kg coffee at 9g per drink has a different cost from the same coffee at 18g.
Should the grinder be included in the semi-automatic price?
Yes. Enter the espresso machine, grinder and essential accessories as one setup cost so the comparison does not understate what is required to begin.
What should I put in annual maintenance?
You can include water filters, cleaning products, descaler, routine servicing, replacement seals and an electricity allowance. Use zero for costs you prefer to exclude.
How does the calculator handle replacement machines?
It divides the ownership period by the expected setup life and rounds up to a whole number of setup purchases. A five-year comparison with a three-year lifespan therefore includes two purchases.
Does the calculation include milk?
Only when you enter a shared extras cost per drink. That field is applied equally to all setups because the same milk or syrup normally costs the same regardless of the brewing machine.
Does it include repairs or resale value?
No. Unexpected repairs, financing costs, warranty cover, resale value and future inflation are excluded because they cannot be predicted reliably from a generic calculator.
Why might semi-automatic coffee cost more than bean-to-cup?
A semi-automatic setup may use a larger coffee dose, a more expensive grinder or higher-priced beans. The calculator does not assume that one bean-based method must always be cheaper.
Method note: total cost equals equipment purchases, consumables, annual maintenance and optional shared extras over the selected period. Cost per drink divides that total by the estimated number of drinks made.
