Café Cost Calculator What does your coffee habit cost?
Estimate what you spend on café coffee each year, compare it with the running cost of making those drinks at home and see how long a coffee-machine setup could take to pay for itself.
Three questions this tool answers
Compare café spending with making coffee at home
Use the café drinks you would realistically replace at home. Include the full cost of the machine, grinder and essential accessories in the setup price.
Enter your figures to estimate payback
The calculation compares monthly café spending with your estimated monthly home running cost.
Your five-year comparison
This is a planning estimate. It assumes the frequency, café price and home running cost remain broadly unchanged.
Three calculations, using the figures you provide
The tool avoids built-in machine prices. That means you can compare any capsule, manual espresso or bean-to-cup setup without waiting for the page to be updated.
Café spending
Coffees per day are multiplied by days per week, the price per drink and 52 weeks. Monthly figures use the annual result divided by 12.
Home running cost
Your monthly estimate is multiplied by 12. Include the consumables that would be needed to replace the café drinks entered in the form.
Payback period
The complete setup price is divided by the monthly difference between café spending and home running costs. Payback is not reached when home costs are equal to or higher than café spending.
Read the result as a planning estimate
It cannot predict future café prices, changes in your routine, repairs or replacement parts. It also assumes that buying a machine genuinely replaces the café coffees entered rather than adding more drinks to your existing habit.
Using the café cost calculator
The result is most useful when every input reflects the drinks you would genuinely replace and the complete home setup you would actually buy.
What should I include in the setup price?
Include the coffee machine and any grinder, scales, milk equipment or essential accessories needed to make the drinks you plan to replace.
What belongs in the monthly home running cost?
Include beans or capsules, milk, filters, cleaning products and any other regular consumables. You may also add an allowance for electricity if you want a more conservative estimate.
Does the calculator include repairs?
No. Repairs and replacement parts are unpredictable. Add a monthly allowance to the running-cost field when you want to create a maintenance buffer.
Why does the result say payback is not reached?
This appears when the estimated monthly cost of making coffee at home is equal to or higher than the café spending being replaced. There is then no monthly saving available to recover the setup price.
Can I use this for a capsule machine?
Yes. Enter the capsule machine’s purchase price and include capsules, milk and cleaning costs in the monthly running-cost estimate.
What if I would still visit cafés sometimes?
Only enter the café drinks that the home setup is likely to replace. Leave occasional social visits or drinks you would continue buying outside the calculation.
Method note: café spending is calculated across 52 weeks. Payback divides the setup price by the estimated monthly saving after home running costs. Figures are rounded for display, while the underlying calculation retains the full values.
