The Sage Barista Express and Bambino Plus can both anchor a capable home espresso setup, but they solve the grinder and milk-workflow questions in opposite ways. The Barista Express combines a 16-setting grinder, espresso machine, pressure gauge and manual steam wand in one body. The Bambino Plus has no grinder, but adds three-second ThermoJet heating, automatic or manual milk texturing and a much narrower machine. The real decision is an integrated all-in-one workflow versus a compact, modular setup built around a separate grinder.
Check the exact model and bundle before buying. This comparison covers the current UK Sage Barista Express SES870 and Sage Bambino Plus SES500. Colour and market suffixes vary, but the core specification should match these model families.
You are starting without a grinder and want grinding, dosing, brewing and manual milk preparation contained in one appliance.
You already own a suitable grinder, want easier milk texturing or need a machine that takes up far less width.
The Bambino Plus route lets you replace or improve the grinder independently without replacing the espresso machine.
Compare the Barista Express with a complete Bambino Plus setup, not with the Bambino Plus machine price on its own.
The main trade-off
The Barista Express is designed as a complete first setup. Beans go into its 250g hopper, the integrated grinder doses directly into the portafilter, and the machine provides a pressure gauge, manual espresso controls and a manual steam wand. It reduces the number of products you need to choose and keeps the coffee station visually cohesive.
The Bambino Plus separates the grinder from the espresso machine. That initially creates another purchase and another appliance to accommodate, but it also lets you choose a grinder around your budget and priorities. Its three-second heating and automatic milk function simplify the machine side of the routine, while the grinder remains independently replaceable or upgradeable.
The convenient all-in-one route
It makes most sense when you want one purchase, one footprint and a fully hands-on milk routine.
The faster modular route
It suits buyers who value automatic milk, compact machine dimensions and freedom to choose the grinder.
The two machines are therefore not natural price equivalents until a grinder is added to the Bambino Plus. They are better understood as two ways of assembling a similar manual espresso station.

The pump figure does not decide this comparison
Both are marketed with a 15-bar pump and a 9-bar extraction phase. That shared specification does not mean they will produce identical coffee, and a larger pump number would not automatically indicate better espresso. Beans, grind quality, dose, puck preparation and recipe remain central.
Espresso quality and the grinder decision
Both machines use Sage’s 54mm portafilter format, are designed around an 18g dose and combine low-pressure pre-infusion with a 9-bar extraction phase. Both also include single-wall baskets for freshly ground coffee and dual-wall baskets that are more forgiving when using pre-ground coffee or a less precisely adjusted grind.
The largest espresso difference is therefore not simply inside the brewer. It is the grinder attached to the workflow. The Barista Express has a built-in steel conical burr grinder with 16 settings and an adjustable grind-amount control. It is convenient and capable of dialling in a broad range of everyday beans, but those 16 positions give less fine adjustment than many current espresso-focused standalone grinders.
The Bambino Plus can be paired with an entry-level espresso grinder, a premium single-dose grinder or something between the two. A current Baratza Encore ESP is a sensible reference pairing because it is designed to provide finer adjustment through the espresso range, but it is not the only valid option. The result is a setup whose espresso potential and price depend substantially on the grinder you choose.
The Barista Express adds an analogue pressure gauge, which provides feedback during extraction. That can help you recognise when a shot is running outside the machine’s intended pressure range. At the same time, though, it does not replace weighing coffee, timing the shot and tasting the result. The Bambino Plus keeps the interface simpler and does not include a gauge.
Decision: choose the Barista Express when an integrated grinder and simpler purchasing decision matter most. Choose the Bambino Plus route when you want to select the grinder yourself or expect grinder upgrades to become part of the hobby.
Which is better for lattes, flat whites and cappuccinos?
The Bambino Plus has the more assisted milk workflow. Its automatic steam mode uses the temperature sensor beneath the jug and offers three temperature settings and three texture settings. Place the jug on the sensor, select the settings and the machine stops the steam cycle automatically. The wand can also be used manually when you want direct control.
The Barista Express uses a manual steam wand. You control how much air enters the milk, how it rolls in the jug and when steaming stops. This is a useful skill to learn, but the early results depend more heavily on technique.
For a household that wants repeatable milk drinks with less practice, the Bambino Plus is usually the easier route. The Barista Express makes more sense when the manual process is part of the appeal and you are happy to learn jug position, aeration and temperature by feel or with a thermometer.
Decision: the Bambino Plus is stronger for automatic milk convenience and still allows manual use. The Barista Express suits someone who specifically wants milk texturing to remain a fully manual part of the routine.
Heat-up, daily workflow and repeated drinks
The Bambino Plus’s ThermoJet system reaches its stated operating temperature in about three seconds. That does not remove the time needed to grind, distribute and tamp the coffee, but it reduces waiting at the machine and allows a quick transition into the drink-making routine.
The Barista Express uses a Thermocoil and requires a longer warm-up, but its grinder is already attached to the machine. You place the portafilter beneath the grinder, adjust the dose, tamp and move it straight to the group head. The Bambino Plus adds a separate grinder workflow, although a well-chosen grinder with a dosing cup or portafilter holder can remain straightforward.
Neither machine is a dual-boiler design. Espresso extraction and milk steaming happen in sequence rather than simultaneously. The Bambino Plus’s rapid heating and hands-free milk option can make one or two milk drinks feel especially quick, while the Barista Express’s larger body and integrated preparation area can feel more cohesive when you are grinding several doses.
The Barista Express also incorporates a dedicated grinder hopper and integrated tamper storage. The Bambino Plus leaves the grinder, tamper and other preparation tools to your chosen setup. That flexibility can be useful, but it creates more individual items on the worktop.
Decision: the Bambino Plus is quicker to become brew-ready and asks less of you during automatic milk texturing. The Barista Express compensates with an integrated bean-to-portafilter workflow and fewer separate purchasing decisions.
Counter space and kitchen fit
The Bambino Plus is only 19.4cm wide, compared with 31.8cm for the Barista Express. It is also substantially lower, which can help beneath wall cupboards. Its depth is slightly greater on Sage’s current published measurements, so it should not be described as smaller in every direction.
The separate grinder changes the real footprint. A Bambino Plus and grinder may occupy as much combined width as the Barista Express, although the two appliances can be positioned apart or arranged around a corner. The Barista Express concentrates everything into one larger block and needs clear vertical access to the hopper.
Also consider handling. The heavier Barista Express tends to remain planted while the portafilter is locked in. The lighter Bambino Plus may need a steadying hand, particularly when the group gasket is new. That is a normal consequence of the compact body rather than an espresso-performance difference.
Decision: choose the Bambino Plus for the narrowest machine body or when you can place the grinder elsewhere. Choose the Barista Express when one consolidated appliance fits the available space better than two smaller devices.
Full setup cost and long-term value
The current UK RRPs are approximately £629.95 for the Barista Express and £399.95 for the Bambino Plus. That apparent £230 gap is not the true comparison for someone starting without equipment, because the Bambino Plus needs an espresso-capable grinder for whole beans.
Using the Baratza Encore ESP at about £159.95 as a practical reference gives a Bambino Plus setup of roughly £560 before scales or optional accessories. At full RRP, that remains below the Barista Express, but only by around £70. Retail promotions can reverse the order: the Barista Express is frequently discounted, while the Bambino Plus and grinder may not be reduced at the same time.
The Bambino Plus has a clear cost advantage when you already own a suitable grinder. It also lets you replace the grinder independently. With the Barista Express, the grinder is part of the purchase price even if you later bypass it with a standalone model.
Both routes have ongoing costs for beans, water filters, cleaning tablets and descaling products. The Barista Express also adds routine grinder and hopper cleaning, while the Bambino Plus setup adds the care requirements of whichever external grinder you choose.
Compare live bundles rather than headline prices
Current Barista Express packages typically include the milk jug and dosing funnel, while the Bambino Plus may be sold on its own or as part of a grinder bundle. A discounted all-in-one package can offer better value than buying two components at full price, although the Bambino Plus becomes more compelling if you already own a suitable espresso grinder.
Decision: the Barista Express is often the better-value first purchase when heavily discounted. The Bambino Plus is financially stronger when you already own a grinder or specifically want to invest in a better standalone grinder from the beginning.
Cleaning, consumables and support
Both machines require the same basic espresso hygiene: knock out and rinse used coffee, purge and wipe the steam wand after milk, empty the drip tray, clean the filter basket and complete cleaning and descaling programmes when required. Both use replaceable water filters and Sage sells current cleaning supplies and replacement parts through its UK support routes.
The Barista Express has more coffee-retention points because beans and grounds pass through the hopper, burrs and grinder chute. These need periodic cleaning in addition to the group head and steam system. The Bambino Plus has no grinder to maintain internally, but the separate grinder has its own burr and chute cleaning routine.
The Bambino Plus’s automatic milk function depends on the jug sensor area remaining clean and dry enough to read correctly. The Barista Express has fewer automatic milk components, but the user must purge the wand and prevent dried milk from blocking the steam tip.
Sage currently provides a two-year repair, replacement or refund guarantee for both machines, alongside product hubs, instruction material, cleaning supplies and replacement parts. That makes support broadly comparable; the more meaningful ownership difference is whether the grinder is integrated or separately serviceable.
Decision: neither is maintenance-free. The Barista Express concentrates machine and grinder care into one appliance, while the Bambino Plus separates the brewer and grinder into independently maintained components.
What if neither setup is quite right?
Sage Barista Express Impress
Consider it when: you want an integrated grinder but would value assisted dosing and tamping feedback.
Trade-off: it costs more than the standard Barista Express and remains a manual-steam, Thermocoil machine.
Sage Bambino
Consider it when: you like the compact ThermoJet format but are happy to steam milk manually and want to reduce the machine cost.
Trade-off: it removes the Bambino Plus’s automatic temperature and texture controls, so the milk workflow becomes more hands-on.
The Sage Barista Pro is another route if you want an integrated grinder with ThermoJet heating and an on-machine display. It automates grinding and dosing, but you still tamp the coffee and texture milk yourself. Its price can overlap with a Bambino Plus and separate-grinder setup, so the better value depends on current offers and whether you prefer one integrated appliance or a modular setup.
Which should you buy?
Sage Barista Express
Best for someone beginning without a grinder who wants one coherent appliance and a fully manual barista-style routine.
- Integrated grinder and machineThe 16-setting grinder, 250g hopper and espresso machine are contained in one body.
- More hands-on feedbackThe pressure gauge and manual steam wand suit buyers who want direct control and practice.
- Strong value when discountedPromotions can make the complete machine cheaper than a Bambino Plus paired with a suitable grinder.
Sage Bambino Plus
Best for milk-drink convenience, a narrow machine footprint and buyers who want to choose or upgrade the grinder independently.
- Faster, easier milk workflowThree-second ThermoJet heating and automatic or manual texturing reduce waiting and guesswork.
- Much narrower machine bodyAt roughly 19.4cm wide, it leaves more worktop space for the separate grinder.
- Stronger grinder upgrade pathYou can choose, replace or improve the grinder independently without changing the espresso machine.
Overall verdict: Barista Express or Bambino Plus?
Choose the Barista Express when you want a complete setup in one purchase. Its integrated grinder is the central advantage: it removes the need to research, buy and position a separate grinder, while the pressure gauge and manual steam wand create a deliberately hands-on routine. At a strong promotional price, it can also undercut a Bambino Plus and credible espresso grinder combination.
Choose the Bambino Plus when milk convenience, compactness or upgradeability matter more. Its automatic wand is easier for repeatable lattes and flat whites, ThermoJet heating reduces waiting, and the separate-grinder approach lets you choose where to spend and improve the setup later.
For a buyer starting from nothing who wants one tidy purchase, the Barista Express is the simpler recommendation. For someone who already owns a capable grinder—or who views the grinder as the most important part of the setup—the Bambino Plus is usually the more flexible choice.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Barista Express better than the Bambino Plus?
Not universally. The Barista Express is the more complete single purchase because it includes a grinder. The Bambino Plus is faster to heat, offers automatic milk texturing and gives you freedom to choose a separate grinder. The better option depends on which workflow you prefer.
Does the Bambino Plus need a grinder?
It can use suitable pre-ground coffee in its dual-wall baskets, but an espresso-capable burr grinder is the stronger route for fresh beans and meaningful control over extraction. Include the grinder in the setup budget rather than comparing machine prices alone.
What grinder should I pair with the Bambino Plus?
The Baratza Encore ESP is a sensible current entry-level electric pairing because its adjustment range is designed to cover espresso as well as broader brew methods. Other valid options include more advanced electric grinders and espresso-capable hand grinders. Our grinder guide compares the current routes.
Do both machines use the same portafilter size?
Both current UK machines use Sage’s 54mm portafilter format and are designed around an 18g dose. That does not mean every third-party 54mm accessory is automatically compatible, so check the exact machine and accessory specification before buying.
Is the Bambino Plus better for milk drinks?
It is easier for milk drinks because it can texture milk automatically using three temperature and three texture settings, while still allowing manual operation. The Barista Express is fully manual, which suits buyers who specifically want to learn and control the milk process themselves.
Can the Barista Express grinder be upgraded?
The internal grinder cannot be swapped for a different grinder model, but you can stop using it and dose coffee from a standalone grinder into the portafilter. This works, although part of the Barista Express’s purchase price and footprint remains tied to the integrated grinder.
Can either machine brew espresso and steam milk at the same time?
No. Both prepare espresso and steam milk sequentially. Buyers who regularly make several milk drinks back to back and want simultaneous brewing and steaming should consider a suitable dual-boiler or heat-exchanger machine instead.
Which machine is easier for a beginner?
The Bambino Plus makes milk preparation easier, but choosing and dialling in a separate grinder remains part of the setup. The Barista Express creates a more self-contained buying decision, but its manual steam wand and integrated grinder still require practice. “Easier” therefore depends on whether milk technique or equipment selection feels like the greater obstacle.
This comparison is based on current Sage UK specifications and support information, exact-model retailer checks, independent hands-on reviews and current grinder information as of August 2026. Prices, bundles, colour suffixes and product configurations can change.
