The single most common question we receive about Nespresso is this: what’s the difference between Original and Vertuo, and which should I choose? It’s a genuinely confusing decision because the two systems look similar on the outside but work completely differently and use entirely different capsules. This guide explains everything clearly — the technology, the taste, the capsule costs, and the specific machines — so you can make the right choice first time.

The Core Difference — Two Completely Different Systems

☕ Original Line

Uses 19-bar pressure to force water through the capsule — traditional espresso extraction. Produces espresso (25ml) and lungo (110ml) only. Works with Nespresso capsules AND a wide range of third-party alternatives from Lavazza, Illy, Peet’s, and dozens of specialty roasters. The system for espresso purists.

🌀 Vertuo Line

Uses centrifusion technology — the capsule spins at up to 7,000rpm as water flows through. Produces five drink sizes from espresso (40ml) to Alto (535ml). Only works with official Nespresso Vertuo capsules — no third-party alternatives exist due to the barcode-identification system. The system for large-drink lovers.

The Taste Difference — What Actually Comes Out?

Original Line

The Original Line produces traditional espresso — a concentrated, intense shot extracted under pressure. If you’ve ever had espresso in a café, Original Line produces the closest approximation. The flavour profile is familiar to espresso drinkers: concentrated, slightly bitter, complex. Adding hot water makes an Americano; adding milk makes a latte or cappuccino.

The intensity and authenticity of the extraction is Original Line’s primary advantage. Espresso purists who are choosing a capsule machine almost always choose Original.

Vertuo Line

Vertuo produces a distinctly different style of coffee. The centrifusion process creates a much larger, thicker crema layer — visually impressive, and the texture is noticeably velvety and smooth. The flavour is less intensely “espresso” and more rounded — less sharp acidity, softer bitterness. Many people who find traditional espresso too intense prefer Vertuo.

The ability to make a genuine 535ml mug of coffee (the Alto size) is a significant practical advantage for those who prefer a larger drink. No Original Line machine can replicate this.

The Capsule Question — The Most Important Decision

This is where the two systems diverge most significantly in the long term:

Original Line Capsule Economics

Official Nespresso capsules cost approximately 35-70p per capsule depending on the range. But Original Line machines also accept a vast range of third-party capsules from brands like Lavazza (from ~25p), Illy (~40p), Peet’s, and dozens of specialty roasters — some as low as 20p per capsule from supermarket own-brands.

This variety is meaningful in two ways: it’s cheaper over time, and it gives you access to a far wider range of coffee styles, origins, and roasters than Nespresso’s own range.

Vertuo Line Capsule Economics

Vertuo machines only accept official Nespresso Vertuo capsules — the barcode system on each capsule programmes the machine’s extraction parameters, making third-party alternatives technically impossible without counterfeiting. Capsules cost 35-70p each with no cheaper alternatives available.

For a household consuming two coffees per day, the annual capsule cost difference between Original (with third-party pods at 25p) and Vertuo (Nespresso only at 50p average) is approximately £180 per year. Over five years, that’s £900 — significant money.

Which Machines Are Available?

Original Line Machines

  • Essenza Mini (~£79) — most compact. Espresso and lungo only.
  • Pixie (~£129) — slightly larger, faster heat up, fold-away drip tray.
  • CitiZ (~£149) — stylish, retro design. Good mid-range option.
  • Creatista Plus (~£349) — adds Sage-developed automatic steam wand. Best Original machine for milk drinks.

Vertuo Line Machines

  • Vertuo Pop (~£79) — most compact Vertuo. Four drink sizes.
  • Vertuo Next (~£99) — our recommended Vertuo entry point. Five drink sizes including Alto.
  • Vertuo Plus (~£149) — motorised capsule ejection, larger water tank.
  • Vertuo Creatista (~£399) — adds automatic steam wand. Best Vertuo for milk drinks.

Our Verdict — Original or Vertuo?

Choose Original Line if: you primarily drink espresso or small milk drinks (lattes, flat whites), you want the widest capsule variety and lowest capsule costs, or you care about traditional espresso extraction.

Choose Vertuo Line if: you prefer larger drinks (mug-sized coffee), you find traditional espresso too intense, or you specifically want the impressive Vertuo crema.

Our recommendation: For most people, Original Line is the better long-term choice — lower ongoing costs, more capsule variety, and authentic espresso extraction. The Essenza Mini at £79 is an excellent entry point.

The exception: if large-format drinks are your primary use case, Vertuo is the clear choice — no Original machine produces a genuine 400-535ml coffee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Original capsules in a Vertuo machine?

No — the two systems are completely incompatible. Original capsules are disc-shaped; Vertuo capsules are dome-shaped with a barcode rim. There is no adaptor or workaround. Choosing your system means committing to that capsule format long-term.

Is Vertuo coffee actually espresso?

Technically, no — traditional espresso is defined by pressure extraction (9 bars minimum). Vertuo uses centrifusion, not pressure. Nespresso doesn’t call it espresso — they use the term “espresso-style” for the smaller Vertuo sizes. For espresso purists, this matters. For most drinkers who simply want a good, convenient coffee, the distinction is academic.

Which Nespresso system is better for lattes?

For milk drinks, both systems work well when paired with a frother. The Creatista models in both lines add built-in steam wands. Between the two without a Creatista machine, there’s no meaningful difference — you add frothed milk from a separate frother regardless of system. The Nespresso Aeroccino 4 frother works with both lines and is our recommended companion purchase.

Are Vertuo capsules more expensive than Original?

Nespresso’s own capsules cost roughly the same in both systems (35-70p each). The meaningful cost difference is that Original Line machines accept cheaper third-party capsules from 20p upward, while Vertuo machines don’t. Over time, this makes Original significantly cheaper to run for heavy users.
