Descaling removes mineral deposits from the water circuit, but the correct solution, quantity and button sequence depend on the exact machine. Follow the machine’s prompt or model-specific manual, use the recommended descaler and allow every rinse stage to finish. Avoid copying instructions for a similar-looking model: even machines in the same range can enter descale mode differently.
Use the machine’s alert where available and make sure its water-hardness setting matches the water you actually use.
Choose the descaler specified for your machine and measure the exact dose shown on the pack or in the manual.
Descaling solution removes mineral scale; cleaning tablets normally target coffee oils. They are not interchangeable.
Set aside enough time, use a large container and do not interrupt the programme unless the machine instructs you to.
What descaling actually does
Heating water can leave calcium-based mineral deposits inside boilers, thermoblocks, valves and pipework. The rate of accumulation depends on water hardness, how much water the machine uses and whether a compatible filter or softening system is installed.
Descaling solution circulates through the water circuit to loosen and remove mineral deposits. This can help maintain water flow, heating performance and steam delivery. It will not fix every problem, though: a blocked filter basket, coffee residue around the group head, dried milk or a build-up of coffee oils all require separate cleaning.
Descaling targets
- Mineral deposits in the water circuit
- Scale around heating components
- Restrictions caused by hard-water build-up
- Maintenance alerts linked to water use
Descaling does not replace
- Backflushing where the machine supports it
- Cleaning coffee oils from baskets and group parts
- Purging and wiping the steam wand
- Cleaning a milk carafe or internal milk circuit
How often should you descale?
There is no reliable universal schedule such as “every two months”. A machine in a hard-water area may reach its alert quickly, while the same model using correctly installed filtration may run much longer. Start with the machine’s prompt or its usage-based instructions.
| Machine situation | Best trigger to follow | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic machine with hardness setting | Descale when the machine displays its alert. | Test the water and set the correct hardness level so the reminder is meaningful. |
| Manual machine with descale light | Run the programme when the alert appears. | Confirm that the light is for descaling rather than a cleaning or backflush cycle. |
| Manual machine without an alert | Use the interval or number of uses in the manual. | Water hardness and daily volume can shorten or extend that interval. |
| Nespresso capsule machine | Follow the interval and process for the exact Original or Vertuo model. | Nespresso’s UK guidance commonly places Original machines in a three-to-six-month range, but model instructions take priority. |
| JURA with activated CLARIS | Replace the filter when prompted rather than adding a calendar descale. | The filter must be compatible, installed and recognised by the machine. |
A slow drink, reduced water output or weaker steam can have several causes, so symptoms alone do not prove that scale is responsible. Check routine cleaning and the troubleshooting guidance for the exact machine before repeating a descale unnecessarily.
Before you start
Find the model code
Check the rating label, underside, rear panel or manual. A family name such as Magnifica Evo or Vertuo is not always specific enough.
Read the exact instructions
Confirm the descaler, quantity, tank fill marks, container size and way to enter the maintenance programme.
Allow enough time
Many cycles take around 20–40 minutes and include pauses. Start only when you can complete every stage.
Remove parts as directed
This may include the portafilter, milk carafe, frother, water filter, softening pouch or capsule.
Choose a large container
Position it under every outlet named in the manual. Some machines discharge through coffee, hot-water and steam outlets.
Measure, do not guess
A multi-dose bottle is not intended to be emptied into the tank. Use the marked dose and then add the stated quantity of water.
Cleaning light or descale light?
On machines such as the Sage Barista range, a cleaning cycle can use a cleaning tablet and blind cleaning disc, while descaling uses dissolved descaler in the water tank. Check which alert is active before adding anything to the machine.
The safe general descaling process
The controls differ, but most domestic machines follow the same broad sequence:
- Empty and prepare the machine. Remove used coffee, capsules and detachable milk parts where instructed. Empty the drip tray and grounds container.
- Remove filtration where required. Many programmes tell you to remove a tank filter, AquaClean cartridge, CLARIS cartridge or De’Longhi SoftBalls before the descaler is added.
- Mix the correct solution. Add the stated descaler dose and water to the exact tank line or quantity in the manual.
- Enter the machine’s descale programme. Use the correct buttons, dial position or maintenance menu for the model code.
- Let the descaling stage finish. The machine may dispense in short bursts and pause for several minutes. These pauses are normally part of the programme.
- Rinse the tank thoroughly. Empty any remaining solution, rinse the tank and refill it with fresh drinking water to the level requested.
- Complete every rinse stage. Some machines need more than one tank or a second confirmation before the alert resets.
- Reinstall or replace the filter. Prime and activate a new cartridge where the manufacturer requires one after descaling.
Do not make coffee until the machine has completed the programme and returned to its normal ready state. A properly completed automatic rinse is usually more reliable than adding an arbitrary number of extra blank shots, although a further fresh-water flush is sensible where the manual asks for one or any descaler smell remains.
Descaling guidance by brand and machine family
Magnifica, Dedica and La Specialista
Use EcoDecalk and follow the controls for the exact product code and revision.
A single De’Longhi EcoDecalk dose is 100ml. The 500ml bottle contains five doses, so do not pour the entire bottle into the tank.
- Magnifica Evo cycles commonly use 100ml to the tank’s A level, followed by water to B and a container of at least 2 litres.
- Magnifica Evo programmes typically take around 30 minutes and include separate rinse stages.
- Dedica and La Specialista controls differ from Magnifica and from one another.
- Remove the filter, water softener or SoftBalls when the instructions say to do so.
Bambino, Barista and Touch ranges
Use Sage machine descaler and keep the descale procedure separate from the cleaning cycle.
Sage models use different control combinations. The Bambino Plus, Barista Express, Express Impress and touchscreen machines should not be treated as one shared sequence.
- Dissolve the Sage descaler dose using the quantities in the exact manual.
- A cleaning tablet and silicone disc are for the cleaning cycle, not descaling.
- Some models guide the cycle on-screen; others use button and dial combinations.
- Complete the fresh-water rinse before returning the machine to use.
2300 and 3300 LatteGo
The current 2300 and 3300 families share a clearly defined Calc/Clean programme.
Remove LatteGo or the classic frother and take the AquaClean filter out of the tank. Add the full CA6700 descaler bottle, then add water to the Calc/Clean mark.
- Use a container of at least 1.5 litres under the coffee and water outlets.
- Hold Calc/Clean for three seconds, then press start/stop.
- Do not interrupt the programme, which can take around 30 minutes.
- Complete the rinse and install and activate the replacement AquaClean filter.
Original and Vertuo machines
Select the precise machine in Nespresso’s assistance centre before entering descale mode.
Vertuo Next, Vertuo Pop, VertuoPlus and Original machines use different button sequences and light patterns, even though the same Nespresso descaling kit can cover the domestic range.
- Remove any capsule and empty the used-capsule container.
- Use the solution and water quantity specified for the model.
- Follow the exact light sequence for entering and leaving descale mode.
- Run the complete rinse before returning to coffee preparation.
E8 and compatible automatic machines
CLARIS filtration changes whether the machine needs a descaling programme.
When a compatible CLARIS cartridge is installed, recognised and replaced as prompted, the machine does not need routine descaling.
- If a descale is required, use JURA 2-phase tablets rather than liquid descaler.
- Remove and deactivate the CLARIS filter before running a descale.
- Follow the maintenance programme shown by the machine.
- Do not confuse descaling tablets with JURA cleaning tablets or milk-system cleaner.
Which descaler should you buy?
The simplest approach is to use the manufacturer’s own current product. This avoids uncertainty over concentration, materials compatibility and whether the dose suits the built-in programme.

Do not default to vinegar
Major machine makers specify formulated descalers rather than household vinegar. Vinegar can be difficult to rinse completely and is not the safe default for seals, metals or an automatic maintenance programme.
Do not empty a multi-dose bottle
De’Longhi’s 500ml EcoDecalk is five doses, while Philips CA6700 is sold as a one-cycle bottle. Similar packaging does not mean the quantity is interchangeable.
Do not interrupt the cycle
Pauses and short bursts are normal. Switching off or refilling at the wrong point can prevent the machine from completing or recording the programme.
Do not improvise a button sequence
A family can contain several revisions with different controls. Use the model code and current manual rather than a video for a visually similar machine.
Water filters and hardness settings
A compatible in-tank filter can reduce limescale formation, but it only helps if it is installed, activated and replaced correctly. On machines with a hardness setting, test the water you put into the tank and program the result rather than selecting a level based only on a broad UK region.
A household filter jug may improve taste and reduce some minerals, but performance varies by cartridge and local water. It does not automatically replace the machine’s own filter programme or remove the need to respond to a descale alert.
Changing water source?
If you move home, switch from tap water to bottled or filtered water, or stop using the machine’s cartridge, retest the water and update the hardness setting. Otherwise the machine may remind you too early or too late.
After descaling and troubleshooting
- Rinse the tank and removable parts: make sure no descaling solution remains on surfaces that contact fresh water.
- Finish the machine’s own rinse programme: do not assume the cycle is complete simply because the tank is empty.
- Refit filtration correctly: prime and activate a new cartridge where required.
- Check the ready state: the maintenance light or message should clear when the full programme has been recognised.
- Flush again if needed: if you can still smell descaler, run the additional fresh-water step permitted by the manual before making coffee.
If the descale light stays on
The most common cause is an incomplete rinse or a programme that was stopped before the machine registered the final stage. Check whether the tank needed filling to MAX, whether a second rinse was required and whether the programme must be exited manually. Do not keep adding descaler: repeat only the fresh-water completion steps recommended for the model or contact support.
If the machine stops dispensing
Make sure the tank is seated correctly and contains the amount of water requested at that stage. If the pump runs without drawing water, the machine leaks, or the programme cannot be resumed using the manual, stop and use the manufacturer’s support route rather than repeatedly cycling the pump.
The key takeaway
Use the correct descaler and the instructions for the exact model. Set water hardness accurately, respond to the machine’s prompt, remove filters and accessories where directed, and let every descale and rinse stage finish.
Check the model code before starting, because a similar-looking machine may use a different solution quantity or control sequence. Keeping descaling separate from coffee-oil and milk-system cleaning also makes it much easier to complete the right maintenance cycle.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use vinegar to descale an espresso machine?
Use the descaler named in the machine’s instructions unless the manufacturer explicitly allows something else. Major domestic brands specify their own formulated products, and vinegar can leave a persistent smell or taste and may not suit the materials or automatic programme.
Is descaling the same as running a cleaning tablet?
No. Descaler targets mineral deposits in the water path. Cleaning tablets generally remove coffee oils from the brewing circuit, while milk-system cleaners target milk residue. Follow the separate programme for each task.
How long does descaling take?
Many domestic programmes take around 20–40 minutes, although the exact time varies. The machine may pause repeatedly while the solution works, so allow enough time to complete the rinse as well as the initial descale stage.
Can I use De’Longhi EcoDecalk in another brand?
De’Longhi presents EcoDecalk as suitable for coffee makers, but the safer choice is still the product named by the other machine’s manufacturer. Concentration, programme design and warranty wording vary, so check the exact manual before substituting.
Why is the descale light still on?
The machine may not have recognised the cycle as complete. Common causes include an interrupted programme, insufficient rinse water, skipping a second rinse or not exiting maintenance mode. Follow the model’s completion or reset instructions before repeating a chemical descale.
Should I remove the water filter before descaling?
Often, yes, but check the exact machine. Philips tells owners to remove AquaClean, De’Longhi procedures commonly remove the tank filter or SoftBalls, and JURA requires CLARIS to be removed and deactivated if a descale programme is run.
Does filtered water mean I never need to descale?
Usually not. Filtration can reduce scale and extend the interval, but most machines still calculate or prompt for maintenance. JURA is a notable exception: with a compatible CLARIS cartridge correctly recognised and replaced, routine descaling is unnecessary.
Can I make coffee immediately after descaling?
Wait until the machine has completed every rinse and returned to its normal ready state. If any descaler smell remains, follow the manual’s additional fresh-water flush guidance before brewing a drink.
This guide uses current UK manufacturer care instructions for De’Longhi, Sage, Philips, Nespresso and JURA as of July 2026. Descaling controls and quantities can change between product codes and revisions, so the exact manual remains the final instruction for your machine.
