Nespresso Original and Vertuo are separate, incompatible capsule systems built around different drinks. Original is the stronger fit if you mainly want ristretto, espresso, lungo and smaller milk drinks, particularly if you value the freedom to buy compatible capsules from other brands. Vertuo makes more sense if you want one-button double espresso, gran lungo, mug and extra-large coffee sizes. The biggest trade-off is capsule flexibility and lower potential running cost versus a much wider range of drink volumes.

This is a system comparison, not a test of one machine from each range. Current Original machines include the Essenza Mini, Pixie, CitiZ, Lattissima and Creatista families. The current Vertuo range includes the Pop, Pop+, Next, Up, Lattissima and Creatista. Exact cup sizes, milk systems, water tanks and connected features vary by machine, and Original and Vertuo capsules cannot be used interchangeably.

Choose Original for

Short espresso-style drinks, smaller milk coffees and access to both Nespresso and third-party compatible capsules.

Choose Vertuo for

Double espresso, gran lungo, mug and selected XL or carafe sizes brewed automatically from size-specific capsules.

Much the same

Both are quick, low-mess capsule systems with compact entry machines, premium milk options and established UK support.

Main trade-off

Original offers greater capsule choice and usually lower long-term costs; Vertuo offers greater drink-size flexibility but keeps you within its own pod ecosystem.

Quick verdict

Nespresso Original

Better for short coffee and capsule choice

Original centres on ristretto, espresso and lungo. Its standard capsule format is also widely supported by compatible brands, giving you more choice over coffee, price and where you buy it.

Nespresso Vertuo

Better for larger drinks

Vertuo reads the barcode around each pod and automatically applies the matching recipe. Current machines can cover several sizes from short coffee through to 230ml mugs, with selected models extending to 355ml XL and 535ml carafe servings.

In simple terms, Original is the safer choice when your normal order is an espresso, lungo, flat white, cappuccino or latte built around a short coffee. Vertuo is the more natural fit when you want the machine to fill a larger cup directly rather than preparing an espresso and adding hot water or milk yourself.

Neither system automatically makes better milk drinks. That depends on the exact machine or frother: both ranges include basic coffee-only machines, automatic Lattissima models and premium Creatista machines with a milk wand.

Decision: start with the cup you use most often. Choose Original for short coffee and capsule freedom; choose Vertuo when larger black coffee is central to the purchase.

The 19-bar figure should not be treated as proof that Original makes a better drink. It describes the pump system, not the pressure necessarily applied through the coffee throughout extraction. Likewise, the size of Vertuo’s foam layer is not a quality score. The useful comparison is the style and volume of coffee each system is designed to make.

Coffee style and cup sizes

Original: short, concentrated drinks

Original uses one capsule format across its ristretto, espresso and lungo recipes. The machine punctures the capsule and pushes hot water through it under pressure. On basic machines you normally select espresso or lungo yourself; models with extra controls can add ristretto, hot water, Americano or milk recipes.

That makes Original easy to understand if your routine begins with a short coffee. An espresso can be drunk as it is, topped with hot water for an Americano or used as the base for a flat white, cappuccino or latte. A lungo sends more water through the capsule, but it does not turn that capsule into a full filter-style mug.

Vertuo: one capsule for each drink format

Vertuo capsules vary in size according to the intended drink. The machine reads the barcode and adjusts factors such as water volume and the spinning extraction cycle automatically. The current system covers espresso and double espresso as well as 150ml gran lungo, 230ml mug, 355ml XL and 535ml carafe formats on compatible machines.

Not every Vertuo machine supports every size. Nespresso currently describes the Pop and Pop+ as six-size machines, while the Next, Up, Vertuo Lattissima and Vertuo Creatista cover seven sizes. The exact pod and machine combination therefore matters if XL or carafe coffee is part of the buying case.

About Vertuo’s foam layer

Vertuo’s spinning process creates a visibly larger, aerated head than Original. Some drinkers enjoy its texture, while others prefer the thinner surface layer on an Original espresso. It is better treated as a difference in drink style than evidence that one system has extracted the coffee more successfully.

Taste is subjective, and neither system is universally better. Original is generally the stronger fit for people who prefer short, concentrated espresso-style drinks, while Vertuo produces a different texture and flavour profile and offers a much wider choice of serving sizes. The better option depends less on an overall quality ranking and more on whether you usually drink espresso, milk-based drinks or larger cups of coffee.

Decision: Original is usually the better fit for a short espresso-style drink. Vertuo is stronger when you want the capsule itself to be portioned for a larger cup rather than diluting a small capsule.

Capsule choice, compatibility and running costs

The capsule decision is the most important long-term difference. Original machines accept Nespresso Original capsules and a broad compatible market from supermarkets, established coffee brands and specialist roasters. Quality and materials vary, so compatibility alone does not guarantee that every alternative will taste the same or work equally cleanly, but the choice is real.

Vertuo uses a proprietary, barcode-based format. In the UK presently, that means buying official Nespresso Vertuo capsules. The official range is broad, including permanent coffees, decaf, flavoured and limited-edition options, but you cannot switch to low-cost supermarket capsules in the way you can with Original.

Vertuo is not automatically more expensive for every equivalent drink. Current Nespresso examples put a Vertuo espresso at roughly 44p–49p, close to many official Original capsules. The gap becomes more visible as the Vertuo serving gets larger: a double espresso is around 57p, a gran lungo around 61p and a 230ml mug coffee around 69p before premium or limited-edition ranges.

What a small capsule-price gap means

A difference of 20p per drink becomes approximately £146 over a year at two coffees per day. Use your likely capsule, serving size and daily consumption rather than comparing the cheapest pod in one system with the largest or most expensive pod in the other.

Machine pricing is less decisive. Entry-level machines from both systems occupy a similar broad price band, and Vertuo hardware is frequently promoted. A low purchase price can be attractive, but it does not remove the ongoing cost or the commitment to the capsule ecosystem.

Decision: Original is the stronger long-term value route if you will use compatible capsules. Vertuo can still represent fair value when its larger drink sizes replace using two Original capsules or solve a routine that Original does not serve well.

Which system is better for milk drinks?

The capsule system does not determine the milk quality on its own. A basic Original or Vertuo machine prepares coffee only, so milk comes from a separate frother such as an Aeroccino. Lattissima machines add an automatic milk carafe, while Creatista machines use an integrated milk wand with more adjustment and a separate jug.

Original is a natural fit for smaller flat whites, cappuccinos and lattes because its 40ml espresso is a familiar base and compatible capsule choice makes it easier to find a coffee that remains noticeable through milk. Vertuo can also work well: the 80ml double-espresso format is convenient for a larger latte, while selected newer machines and capsules support concentrated recipe modes intended for milk or iced drinks.

Do not choose between Original and Vertuo solely because both ranges contain a machine called Lattissima or Creatista. The exact controls, milk system, tank size, cleaning routine and price differ substantially. Compare the specific machine once you have decided which capsule family and drink sizes suit you.

Decision: choose the capsule system for the coffee volume and pod ecosystem, then choose the exact milk setup. Original has an advantage for flexible short-coffee bases; Vertuo is useful when you want an 80ml double espresso or a larger coffee-and-milk recipe from one pod.

Speed, controls and kitchen fit

Both systems are designed for quick, low-mess use: fill the tank, insert a capsule, place the cup and start the drink. Original machines normally ask you to press the relevant size button. Vertuo reads the capsule and selects the programmed recipe, reducing the chance of choosing the wrong volume.

Exact timings depend on the machine and drink. Independent tests have found basic Original machines exceptionally quick for short drinks, while larger Vertuo drinks naturally take longer to dispense. Newer hardware can narrow the warm-up gap: for example, Nespresso currently states that the Vertuo Up is ready to brew in around three seconds.

Original has some of the smallest machines in the wider pod market. The Essenza Mini is a particularly compact route for espresso and lungo. The Vertuo Pop is also narrow, but the deeper capsule head, larger pods and cup clearance still need consideration. Vertuo becomes more useful when you have room for taller mugs or travel cups and actively want those drink sizes.

Several current Vertuo models add Bluetooth or Wi-Fi for software updates, maintenance alerts or selected app adjustments. These functions are not necessary for basic brewing and should not outweigh capsule compatibility or drink size. Original’s simpler controls may be preferable if you want a machine with no connected setup.

Decision: Original usually wins for the smallest, simplest espresso setup. Vertuo offers the easier size-selection workflow and better tall-cup versatility, but check the exact machine dimensions and supported pod sizes.

Cleaning, recycling and ownership

Routine care is similar across the two systems. Empty the used-capsule container and drip tray, refresh the water, wipe the outlet and descale according to the machine prompt or manual. Machines with milk carafes or steam wands add a separate cleaning routine, and automatic rinsing does not remove the need to wash milk-contact parts.

Nespresso provides UK recycling routes for both capsule formats. Current options include Royal Mail drop-off using a QR code, Nespresso Boutique returns and Podback kerbside collection where the local authority participates. The capsules should be collected through an appropriate pod-recycling route rather than placed loose in ordinary household recycling.

Vertuo capsules are physically larger, so they occupy more storage and recycling-bag space. Nespresso says a recycling bag holds approximately 150 Original capsules or about 65 Vertuo capsules. That does not make one format unrecyclable, but it can affect how often a busy household needs to return a bag.

Nespresso currently provides a two-year machine warranty with collection and repair support, and its UK assistance pages cover both current and older Original and Vertuo models. Consumables such as descaler, recycling bags, milk accessories and removable spare parts remain part of the wider ownership ecosystem.

Decision: neither system is maintenance-free. Original has the advantage of smaller capsules and more purchasing routes; Vertuo has the same established support and recycling infrastructure but creates bulkier used pods.

Which current machines should you consider?

Current Original routes

  • Essenza Mini: the compact entry point for espresso and lungo.
  • Pixie: a small machine with more metal in the exterior design.
  • CitiZ and CitiZ Platinum: a taller design-led route; Platinum adds broader drink and hot-water options.
  • Lattissima One and Gran Lattissima: automatic milk preparation with different drink menus and carafe capacities.
  • Creatista Plus and Creatista Pro: premium machines with an integrated steam wand and more milk control.

Current Vertuo routes

  • Vertuo Pop: the compact entry model for six coffee sizes.
  • Vertuo Pop+: a compact machine with a larger water tank and metallic finish.
  • Vertuo Next: a seven-size model that includes XL and carafe capability.
  • Vertuo Up: the newest slim model, with seven sizes, Coffee Creations mode and app-connected adjustments.
  • Vertuo Lattissima and Vertuo Creatista: automatic-carafe and steam-wand routes for milk drinks.

The machine range reinforces the system decision rather than replacing it. A premium Original Creatista still uses Original capsules and remains focused on shorter coffee. A premium Vertuo Creatista adds a sophisticated milk wand, but the coffee side remains tied to Vertuo pod sizes and pricing.

Overall verdict: Nespresso Original or Vertuo?

Choose Original when short coffee and capsule flexibility matter most. It is the more adaptable route for espresso, lungo and smaller milk drinks, and the compatible-capsule market gives you more control over ongoing cost and coffee choice.

Choose Vertuo when larger drink sizes are the reason you want a capsule machine. Its double espresso, gran lungo, mug, XL and carafe formats are a genuine practical advantage, and barcode recognition makes the workflow exceptionally simple. The compromise is dependence on official Vertuo capsules and the higher price attached to many larger servings.

For someone who is undecided and normally drinks espresso, cappuccino, flat white or latte, Original is generally the lower-risk starting point. For someone who specifically wants a 150ml or 230ml black coffee from one capsule, Vertuo is the Nespresso system designed around that routine.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use Original capsules in a Vertuo machine?

No. Original and Vertuo capsules have different shapes, dimensions and brewing systems. There is no official cross-compatible adaptor, so choosing a machine commits you to its capsule family.

Is Original or Vertuo cheaper to run?

Original usually offers the lower potential running cost because compatible third-party capsules are widely available. Official espresso capsules can be quite close in price across the two systems, but Vertuo prices increase for double espresso, gran lungo, mug and specialty formats.

Which Nespresso system is better for espresso?

Original is usually the better fit for someone whose priority is a short espresso-style drink. It uses pressure-based extraction and offers a much wider compatible-capsule market. It should still be understood as capsule coffee rather than the same process or level of control as a traditional espresso machine and grinder.

Which system is better for a large cup of coffee?

Vertuo. Its size-specific pods include 150ml gran lungo, 230ml mug, 355ml XL and 535ml carafe formats on compatible machines. Original normally requires you to add hot water to an espresso or accept the more diluted result of extending a standard capsule.

Does Vertuo have third-party capsules?

Not in the current mainstream UK market. Vertuo uses Nespresso’s proprietary barcode-based capsule system, so buyers should plan around official Nespresso Vertuo pods rather than assuming supermarket-compatible alternatives will become part of the routine.

Which is better for lattes and cappuccinos?

Both can work well. Original offers a familiar 40ml espresso base and broad capsule choice. Vertuo offers an 80ml double espresso that can suit a larger milk drink. The more important difference is whether the exact machine uses a separate Aeroccino, an automatic Lattissima carafe or a Creatista steam wand.

Is the thick layer on Vertuo coffee crema?

Vertuo’s Centrifusion process creates a large aerated foam layer that Nespresso describes as crema. Its texture is different from the thinner crema associated with pressure-brewed espresso, and its size should not be used by itself as a measure of coffee quality.

Can both types of capsule be recycled?

Yes. Nespresso provides recycling routes for both Original and Vertuo capsules through Royal Mail drop-off, boutiques and Podback kerbside services where available. Use the relevant collection bag and local route rather than placing loose capsules in normal household recycling.

This comparison is based on current Nespresso UK machine and capsule information, independent testing and hands-on reviews, retailer checks and current support and recycling information as of August 2026. Prices, blends, promotions, machine ranges and product configurations can change.
